Evaluation - Question 3 - The survey results

These are the results from the survey that we made for people that has watched our video.

As you can more people over the age of 30 took the survey which was very surprising considering that our video was made with the energetic feel for teenagers. To see see that our video has appealed to an older audience has surprised us.

As you can see more females took the survey, this could be suggesting the typical boy band look as been achieved. This is also good because it shows that if we did do another song we should try to aim it at both types of audiences.

From the results above you can see that our video got a good response, as majority of the people said that it was good and a few said it was excellent. This clearly shows that we can make a decent music video, but overall people enjoyed our music video.

The question above was critical that people said it was accurate and that is the response that we got. Obviously we didn't want that lip syncing to be out, and majority of the people that took our survey said that the lip synching was accurate.

As you can see from the results every one liked the performances in our video which is a good thing. So the audience obviously thought that the band performed to the best of their ability.

As you can see from the responses above we got a positive feedback and majority of the people that took the survey thought that our location for the music video was good. Only a few said that it was ok sometimes.

From the results above shows that the audience enjoyed the video as it was fast paced and energetic. Some of the responses said that they felt like getting up and dancing to it them selves.

The thing that i liked about this response is that most people said that the video was good and that nothing needed to be changed or improved which is good for us. Although there were a few things that people said that needed to be changed for example one person said that the girls costume was to boring there was no colour what so ever.

Overall what this survey has showed me is that our music video isn't that bad and the people enjoyed it which is always a good thing.

Evaluation - Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?

Question 2
View more presentations from kibriya55.

What we learnt from the focus group is that our digi-pack and the magazine advert look very similar and are related to our music video.

Evaluation - Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

I think that our music video has similar scenes to real music video. Like Ultra Beat has a scene of a boy and girl signing together like we do in our music video.

As you can see the similarity in the two music videos as our one is at the bottom, the only difference that i would say is that UltraBeat - Fascination uses a mid shot where as in our music video we use a long shot. We even use a similar microphone to the UltraBeat video.

There is another sequence where we have a similar band sequence to a real music video, for example in the Aphasia - Flatline we have a similar band sequence to them.

As you can the see the two pictures again our band being at the bottom, you can see that just like the professional music video we had to two guitarist on the side of the lead singer. And they also stand in a triangle formation as we do which is quite neat. Again the only difference that i will say will be that they are more spread out as the band where as we are more close together, they also use a low angle to look up at the band to show that they are powerful where as we just a straight angle.

These two snap shots are from my music video and The Rumble Strip - Motorcycles, as you can see in both pictures they are just messing about, just singing along to the song and not much else happening other than a little bit of dancing.

The 4 Phases

Christian Metz identified four phases:

  • Initial phase
  • Classical phase
  • Declining phase
  • Parody phase
The film Airport went through all these phases,
  • Initial phase - Airport
  • Classical phase - The Towering Inferno
  • Declining phase - Airport 80: The Concord
  • Parody phase - Airplane!

The three act structure

In Hollywood film narrative tends to be organised in what is called "Three act Structure".

In this structure a film must be set up within the first 20-30 minutes before the main character or protagonist experiences a 'Plot point' That gives him or her a goal that needs to be achieved.

Approximately half of the movie must then be taken up with characters struggling to  his or her goal, this is the 'Confrontation' period.

The final quarter of the film despite the climatic struggle by the protagonist to finally achieve his/her goal and the after math of this struggle.

Genre

What is Genre?
Genre is a kind or type so for example:

  • Horror
  • Action
  • Thriller
  • RomCom
  • Comedy
  • Animation
  • Romance
  • Sci-Fi
Genre have characteristic features that are recognised by audiences. So for example in a western film we see similar characters, situation and settings.

Audiences and Genre

Audiences develop an understanding that certain expectation maybe fulfilled. They also recognise key elements in the genre so they will associate a knife with a horror film.

These key elements are called paradigms, and there are two types of them:

1) Iconographic - Signs and symbols
2) Structural - How structure in the text deal with issues such as ideology.

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp identified 8 key characters in these stories.

And they are:

  • Hero
  • Villain
  • Donor (Provider)
  • Helper (Assistance)
  • Father
  • Dispatcher
  • Princess
  • False Hero
Propp argued that characters could fulfill more than one of these rolls and that there can be more than one of each character type.

Roland Barthes Theory

Barthes described all the text as a complex bundle of meaning which can be unravelled to create a whole range of different meanings.

According to Barthes text can be:

  • Open: With numerous threads to pul
  • Closed: with only one obvious threads to grasp
These threads Barthes referees them to  as a narrative code. The most significant of these codes is the Enigma code.

The enigma cde is usually introduced in the disruption phase of Todorov.

Audience Theory

Suture
Classical Hollywood narrative, editing, sound and mise-en-scene. This positions the audience in certain ways making only one preferred reading possible, how ever the audience are not aware that they are in that situation.

The Gaze
The gaze is when it sees the women as an object of erotic desire. So the Triple gaze is the audience looks through the camera which is looking at the women.

Agency
This is when the protagonist is the main focus and he he centre of attention so everything unfolds in front of him. The female character is passive and powerless, so a good example would be when the male protagonist goes to save the women.

Audience Decodes meaning/message

Audiences and Audience Theory

There will be two theory's that we are going to look at:

  • Suture
  • Feminist film theory and audiences

Suture

Classical Hollywood narrative, editing, sound and mise-en-scene 'suture' or positions the audience in certain ways making only one preferred reading possible, however unconscious the audience is of that position.

Stuart Hall

Stuart Hall identified three types of audiences reading the text:

  • Dominant or preferred
  • Negotiated
  • Oppositional
Dominant

This is where the the audience decodes the message as the producer wants them to do and agree with it. For example watching a political speech and agreeing with it.

Negotiated

This is when the audience accepts, rejects or refines the element of the text in light of previously held views.  For example neither agreeing or disagreeing with political speech or being disinterested.

Oppositional

Where the dominant meaning is recognised but rejected for cultural political or ideological reasons, for example total rejection of the political speech and active opposition.

Reception Theory

Given the effects model and gratification model have there problems and limitations a different approach to audiences was developed by the academic Stuart Hall at Birmingham University in the 1970's.

This Considered how text were encoded with meaning by producers and then developed by audience.

The theory suggest :

  • When a producer constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey to the audience.
  • In some instances audiences will correctly decode the messages or meaning and understand what the producers was trying to say.
  • or the audience will either reject or fail to correctly understand the message.

More filming

Today we went out to do some extra filming including the female singer. we went filming at different angles. But because the deadline was tight we had to find a female singer as soon as possible and wasn't camera shy, and she did well as she learnt the lyrics in 10 minutes which was a plus side.

Bobo Doll - The Experiment

In the experiment children watched a video where an adult violently attacked a clown toy call bobo doll. The children were then taken to another room full of toys that they were not aloud to touch and then the same children were taken to a room will the bobo doll.

Around 88% of the children imitated the violent behavior that they had earlier viewed. Then 8 months later 40% of children reproduced the same violent behavior.

The conclusion that was reached was that children will imitate violent media text, but like all experiments there are problems with it. But still even to this day the effects model is still a dominant theory used by politicians.

Key examples:

  • The film child play 3 is linked to the murder of James Bulger in 1993
  • The game Manhunt in the murder of Stefan Pakeerah in 2004 by his friend Warren LeBlance
  • The film Severance in 2006 caused the death of Simon Everitt
In some cases certain films were banned in the UK to stop the crime rate.

The Gratification Model

The uses and gratification model i the opposite of the effects model.

This basically means that the audience has the power not the producers, this theory emphasis what audiences do with the media text and why they use them.  Yet again the audience gets to choose if they want to reject what they saw or take it onboard.

Audiences therefore use media text to gratify needs for:

  • Diversion
  • Escapism
  • Information
  • Pleasure
  • Comparing relationships and lifestyles
  • Sexual stimulation
The audience is on control and consumption of the media helps with issues such as:
  • Emotional satisfaction
  • Learning
  • Relaxation
  • Help with issues of personal identity
  • Help with issues of social identity
  • Help with issues of aggression and violence
Controversially the theory suggest the consumption of violent images can be helpful rather than harmful.

The theory suggest that audiences act out their violent impulses through the consumption of media violence.

Filming

Today we went out filming because our teacher said we needed more clips. so we did some more lip syncing because in our video there is too much clips of people having fun.
